What Can Our Fingerprints Reveal?

Since the first use of fingerprint identification in 1858, we’ve known that the combination of whorls, arches and loops that make up the pattern of our fingerprint is unique to each finger.
When you look at your finger, the friction ridges on the pad of the finger contain tiny eccrine sweat glands which exude a sticky salty liquid. When the finger is pressed against a surface, more of this liquid is exuded to aid in grip.
When Scenes of Crime officers ‘dust’ for prints using aluminium powder, they are looking for eccrine sweat that has been transferred to a surface and leaves behind the intricate shape of a fingerprint.
What you may not know, however, is that eccrine sweat can now be used to test for drugs of abuse, simply and quickly.
The fingerprint screening system currently detects 4 of the most common drug types in one simple test. A sample is collected into a test cassette by pressing the finger on the collection pad, before the sample is washed through the cassette by buffer and transferred to the reader for analysis.
The sample collection takes less than a minute, and results are available in 10 minutes.

The Urinalysis strip is often the first test used to highlight a wide range of conditions by looking for pathological changes to various parameters in urine.
The test strip is dipped into a urine sample, then using the provided colour chart, any colour change is compared to ascertain concentration levels of substances within the urine.
Any irregular results should be confirmed with additional laboratory testing of the urine sample.
