About compression springs
This compression spring is used for compressive load. Basically it’s cylindrical shape but there are conical shape, barrel shape, etc. Ends shape is decided by the usage. Normally closed end without grinding, closed end with grinding and open end without grinding are chosen for compression spring.

About tension springs
This tension spring is used for tensile load. Body part is close wound. The inner strength which is called initial tension at close wound part while having no load is considered, then designed and manufactured. Basic hook shapes of extension spring are on the picture.
