SEBA – How stressed do we really feel?
The aim oft he project SEBA is the development of an objective stress detection system. Mental stress in the workplace is a major cause of absence from work and the employer has the obligation to improve harmful working conditions. So far, the analysis of mental workload is carried out by using checklists, questionnaires, interviews or group discussions. However, the received result is subjective and the evaluation is expensive. Furthermore, the informative value is severely limited.
SEBA is intended to objectively measure the mental stress (stress or negative emotions), relevant environmental parameters such as e.g. noise, lighting conditions or temperature, as well as unobtrusively visualize critical states to the user.
In addition, the employers are informed of disturbing environmental parameters (for example, flickering light) to enhance the working or desktop environment.
A headband was chosen as the sensor unit, as it may include sensors for measuring environmental parameters and vital signs. Environmental parameters are for example: noise, light (brightness, color, frequency), air quality (pressure, CO2 content, flow, humidity).
The vital signs include, for example: blinking frequency (EOG), head movement, brain activity (EEG), sweating (skin conductance), heart activity (heart rate, heart rate variability).
The data is transmitted to a software specially developed for the project. The employee receives user-related feedback and the employer is provided with data on disturbing or harmful environmental parameters (and possibly averaged vital data). Particular attention is paid to the consideration of privacy and personal rights of employees.
The system enables employers to perform workplace analysis and users to analyze and counter critical conditions.

Health@Hand: Patient data at a glance
Health@Hand is a visual control center to be used at nursing homes or hospitals. Health and administrative data are visualized on a virtual image of the real ward. Here, the control center serves as a supportive tool for decision-makers on site, be it the senior physician, head nurse, nursing staff or controller. Information is summarized and visually processed so that multi-layered contexts can be comprehended faster.
In the process, the control center analyzes the data at hand in several stages. Key figures for the entire ward can either be displayed completely or viewed in detail – for instance for individual rooms or for a selected period of time.
Health@Hand provides the following information on any facility clearly and to the minute. These include digital patient and vital data, room occupancy and capacity, personnel scheduling and sitessituation assessment of malfunctions or incidents, room data and cleaning / disinfection logs as well as administrative data.
Health@Hand supports decision-makers at nursing homes and hospitals. The control room allows for the integration of different data sources and systems like hospital information management, quality control, documentation and vital tracking. via an interactive visualization of data at a multitouch table the medical staff can easily follow the modifications of a ward on the virtual model.
The Health@Hand technology is mobile and web-enabled. The staff can access and interactively exchange control center data from anywhere via mobile end devices such as tablets.

Data@Hand: Intelligent Data Analytics
Artificial intelligence, and in particular machine learning, enables the rapid analysis of enormous volumes of complex data. Fraunhofer IGD’s Data@Hand solution provides the technological basis for automated data analytics for a broad range of applications. The tool analyzes data faster, detects anomalies sooner, and can assess the significance of data. Moreover, Data@Hand can be integrated into visual analysis tools. As a result, users can continue to work with their familiar system while Data@Hand runs in the background.
Efficient technology
Data@Hand assists people with their work tasks and decision-making processes
Rapid and automatic preprocessing of data
Intelligent analysis of data collections
Visualization for immediate identification of anomalies
Machine learning continuously improves data analysis
Use case: Predictive analytics
Data@Hand can identify deviations from average values and normal states in medical patients’ vital signs and other medical data. These anomalies are forwarded to the visual assistance application, and staff are alerted to critical outliers. Findings from intelligent data analysis complement the medical expertise of physicians. These fresh insights are available “at the touch of a button”, accelerating processes considerably – and freeing up precious time to focus on patients. Data@Hand provides support for the creation of treatment plans, plus prognoses of their success. At the same time, however, the interpretation of analysis results and final decision remains in the capable hands of the patient’s doctor.
Using intelligent analytics and visualization of critical states, Data@Hand transforms large volumes of data into a valuable tool that actively aids decision-making.
Your benefits
Early detection of anomalies and unexpected events
Flexible deployment in industrial and medical environments
Integration with existing systems: operation requires no specialized skills, no learning of a new system
Algorithm can be tailored to the users’ unique needs and questions
