Dissolvable Films for Medical Applications
Adhesives Research’s dissolvable film technologies are polymer films that may contain reagents or other active materials designed to erode or dissolve at predetermined rates when in contact with a biological fluid or other liquid. This is an efficient medium for stabilizing sensitive reagents, delivering therapeutic agents or dispersing pigments. The dissolvable films’ dissolution rates are completely customizable to enable each pre-measured, preservative-free film strip to deliver a specified release over time.
Benefits of this technology:
Tailorable characteristics such as thickness, dissolution rate, texture and tensile strength
Provides concentrated doses of reagent or therapy within a homogenous film coating
Dry film format improves reagent/active ingredient stability
Allows for more efficient use of reagents/active ingredient when compared to other distribution techniques such as spraying
Provides separation of reagents/active ingredient components
Enables continuous web processing
Product category: Adhesives
Electrically Conductive Adhesives and Films
Adhesives Research (AR) offers homogeneous, electrically conductive pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) technology, which has proven success of increasing the functionality of electronic applications for more than 20 years. These PSAs can be used for transmitting current through layers of a device, forming electrical interconnections and bonding electrical components.
Benefits of this technology:
Homogenous conductive adhesive technology for stability & consistency
Enables smaller designs through thin, effective bonds
Reliable electrical contact without pressure
Combines excellent bond strength with stable conductivity, even under mechanical & environmental stress
Offers excellent & tailorable X, Y & Z conductivity
Bonds in ambient temperatures while providing stable performance in extreme temperature & humidity conditions
Enables electrical conductivity between or across adhesive bonds
Offers tailorable volume and surface resistance
Provides reliable bonds with strong cold drop performance and shock resistance

ARx (Drug Delivery Systems)
As a leading industry expert of drug-loaded dissolvable film and patch delivery systems, ARx is an innovative development and manufacturing partner for novel drug products. ARx’s work expands dosage form possibilities for new or existing drug products by enhancing bioavailability and increasing patient compliance. The result is enriched patient well-being through robust drug delivery systems.
ARx focuses primarily on transdermal and transmucosal routes of administration to leverage our proven expertise in Quality by Design (QbD)-based controls, formulation, analytical testing, mixing, coating and drying. Our drug delivery systems and expertise include:
oral, buccal, sublingual and mucosal thin films, and transdermal patches.
As an extension of our customers’ project teams, ARx builds a collaborative development plan based upon the needs of the filing strategy, QbD principles and critical milestones. Project experience spans a range of therapies in support of FDA ANDA’s, 505(b)(1) and 505(b)(2) NDA’s, in addition to support for filings with global agencies around the world.
Product category: Microfluidics
ARx Buccal, Sublingual and Mucosal Thin Films
Buccal, sublingual and mucosal thin films from ARx, LLC provide added bioavailability benefits and fast API absorption compared to traditional dosage forms.
ARx custom formulates and manufactures drug-loaded mucosal film systems, designed to bond to challenging mucosal tissues for specified periods of time, while proving comfortable for the patient. The systems may be single or multi layer and formulated for removal upon treatment, or to completely erode at a pre-determined time. Multi-layer systems provide an added benefit in insuring API penetration through mucosal tissue before the entire system is dissolved.
Dissolvable films integrate most available forms of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), including micronized, granulated, salt and free-base forms. Both soluble and insoluble drugs have been successfully compounded into solutions and suspensions which are further processed into a dissolvable film. Active concentrations of larger particle sized compounds are possible up to 50% of the final unit mass; the intended dose is achieved by determining and precisely controlling the size and thickness of the final film.
Benefits of ARx buccal, sublingual and mucosal thin film technologies:
Formulation Flexibility:
Tailorable film characteristics including dissolution rates, adhesion, film thickness, material composition, taste-masking and API absorption rates
Dissolution may be triggered for a specific biological fluid, pH or other condition
Multi-layered product constructions available for optimum bio-availability and stability
A variety of excipient options for API compatibility and stability
Multi-layered product constructions available for stability and efficacy
